근대 영국 음악 부흥에 일생을 바친 본 윌리엄즈는
86세의 생애중 모두 9곡의 교향곡을 작곡했다.
4악장에 의한 소프라노와 바리톤 독창 합창과
관현악을 위한 바다의 교향곡 이란 정식 명칭을 가진 제1번은
미국의 시인 월터 휘트만의 시집 풀잎에서 4편을 발췌한 것이다.
이 작품은 바다를 사실적으로 묘사 했다기보다
바다를 통해 죽음을 물리치는 인간 승리와
미지의 세계에의 출범으로서 바다가 표현되어져 있다.
곡은 고전 교향곡 양식을 따르고 있으나
성악이 많아 교향적 칸타타의 성격이 강하다.(1910년 작품)
